Greetings 2006
Firstly I’d like to wish everyone who reads my blog a happy new year. I hope that everyone can look back on 2005 and build on their experiences to have an altogether more entertaining and more productive 2006.
Moving on to the celebrations. For the first year ever I decided to head in to the centre of London to celebrate the new year. I was told it would be crowded and a stupid thing to do, but being the stubborn person that I am, decided to go anyway. Alicia and I got the bus to Oxford St and then walked to Westminster. We managed to squeeze our way to the edge of Westminster Bridge with a great view of both the London Eye and The Clock Tower (Big Ben) and stood our ground for the last half hour of 2005.
At the stroke of midnight we witnessed a spectacular fireworks display centred around the London Eye. It has been a long time since I witnessed a truly original fireworks display, but the London Eye provides the perfect framework for a creative display. The display built to a deafening climax, made all the more dramatic because the sound of the explosions echoed from all directions. I’m sorry, but the photos do not do justice to the display.
I really enjoyed the night and would definitely be tempted to go back for future new year’s celebrations. If there was one negative about the evening, it was the behaviour of a small group of drunk, English, self-centred, youths (best described as yobs) who seemed intent on making the night a misery for anyone but themselves. The most disturbing thing for me was that in a crowed that seemed to be made up more of tourists than locals, the only anti-social behaviour was from British youths.
