Lesson 2: Where are you from?

March 19, 2007

你好。After getting to grips with the basic greetings I moved on to lesson 2, “Where are you from?” I’m sure this lesson should be entitled, “Where is he from?” Anyway, straight on to the dialogue.

Dialogue:
A: 他是美国人吗?
B: 不是,他是英国人。
A: 他很忙吗?
B: 对,他很忙。

A: Is he American?
B: No, he is English.
A: Is he very busy?
B: Yes, he is very busy.

Lesson two and already I have come across a couple of words that cause me problems. In Chinese, the words for he, she and it all sound the same, ta1. However, they all have different characters, 他,她 and 它. For me this is one of the most challenging aspects of learning to read Chinese characters, they don’t represent sounds in the way that the Roman characters do. I’m not too sure how I am going to relate English to PinYin to Chinese, but I’m hoping it is something that will come with practice.
