Lesson 10: The Four Tones

March 28, 2007

Lesson 10 is dedicated to learning the four tones, something I badly need to do. I can repeat mā má mă mà as many times as I want, when it comes to full sentences I find it really difficult to recognise them. Trying to get them correct when speaking is another thing all together. Ben Macintyre, from The Times, suggests moving your head to indicate the tones as you say the words. Maybe I should try that. I guess this is one of those lessons that I just have to note and move on. The tones will come with practice.

Today I discovered another ChinesePod secret, The Saturday Show and by coincidence they mentioned a video made to highlight the importance of learning the tones. I had a small chuckle watching it so thought I’d share it.

Find out more about the video at ChinesePod.

I’ve only listened to a couple of episodes of the Saturday Show but I really like it. It breaks up the Chinese lessons with interest, humour, music and personality. I’m actually starting to enjoy learning Chinese.

More tomorrow.
