今天晚上我吃了第一个月饼。

This weekend is the celebration of the mid-Autumn festival (中秋节) in China. We celebrated by eating a mooncake and drinking oolong tea. The cake itself was filled with lotus paste (莲蓉月饼). I was advised to nibble the cake rather than eat it in one mouthfull; advice I’d recommend to anyone. The cake was quite heavy and despite the nice taste left my mouth feeling dry. A pot of oolong tea (乌龙茶) soon took care of that.

Yeah, those are some heavy moon cakes. The one I had was refrigerated with a jam filling–no lotus paste. Supposedly, Haagen Daz makes a great ice cream moon cake if you’re willing to spend the money.

@ChinaMatt -
It’s surprising you mention the Haagen Daz moon cakes. It was only this morning that I was hearing about them on the Dear Amber show from ChinesePod. Apparently there are a number of new, trendy, fillings designed to capitalise on the fact that the traditional fillings aren’t liked much by the current generation of Chinese.
